Worship at
Concord Presbyterian Church
"We
will feed the spiritual and intellectual hunger of God's people."
"We
will respond to God's goodness with celebration!"
WORSHIP
Sunday
morning - 10:30 am
In worship,
we gather as a community to hear God's message of love
through spoken word, music and prayer for ourselves and
the world. Every
Sunday morning we come together for a
traditional worship service, and on the 2nd
Wednesday of each month, we offer an intimate,
informal worship service. Other worship
opportunities are provided as determined by the church
calendar, including Advent
Trysts and Wednesday
Evening Lenten services,
Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, and Easter Sunrise services.
 Communion
is generally served
on the first Sunday of every month and
additionally during special seasons of the church year. Christ invites
everyone to his table and we can do no less. (Membership
is not required.)
Music
is an important part of our worship. Though embracing musical
diversity, our worship music tends to be traditional in style,
utilizing both classical and contemporary composers.
We
encourage participation by
children and youth in our worship services. We
include a special time just for them (Children's Sermon) and include
activities to help them understand and prepare for worship.
Children may also participate as acolytes.
We
include older
youth among those asked to read scripture lessons and assist as lay
worship leaders.
If
you visit our worship service, we hope you will make yourself known to
the greeters and to the Pastor
after the service. Also please provide contact information in
the red attendance pads you will find in the pews.
Annual
Spiritual
Retreat
- in the Fall each year, a retreat is organized to recharge
the
spiritual batteries. In recent years, it has been held in
Lewes,
DE. An outside (non-member) resource is usually recruited to
lead
us in this retreat. See the On-line
Events Calendar
or call the church office (302-654-9652) for
more details.
Advent
Trysts (December):
After December 25 was established as the date for the
celebration of
the birth of Christ, early Christian families felt a need to prepare
themselves for this blessed event, so they set aside four weeks before
Christmas as the Advent Season. We observe a short worship service in
the
Chapel including lighting of the Advent wreath, special music, and
moments of reflection by the pastor. Concord
Women provide dessert
and coffee, and you are invited to bring a sandwich to Jessie's Room
for lunch.
Lenten
services: During the Lenten season,
starting with Ash Wednesday, we gather for a simple
dinner followed by an intimate, informal worship service on
Wednesday
evenings, culminating with the Maunday Thursday service during Holy
Week.
Diaspora
Prayer: Diaspora,
a Greek word meaning “scattered” has been used
since Biblical times. Concord's Diaspora Prayer Group bears this name
because we are scattered and pray, wherever we happen to be, at 9:00
a.m. on Mondays. We also pray at other times, such as during grave
emergencies, for those who are ill, bereaved, or troubled, and for our
pastors and staff, missionaries, and our young people away from home.
Membership in the Diaspora Prayer Group is open to any member of
Concord who will commit to pray at the set time and will zealously
guard the privacy of those for whom we pray. Once a year we meet with
our pastors for a Prayer Coffee.
THE
WORSHIP AND MUSIC COMMITTEE
This committee meets select months on the third Wednesday of the month
at 7:30 p.m. in Jessie's Room. It is the responsibility of the Worship
and Music Committee "to provide for the worship of the people of God,
including the preaching of the Word, the sharing of the Sacraments, and
the music program, in keeping with the principles in the Directory of
Worship." Book of Order
